GREAT LAKE HOTEL & MIENA VILLAGE DEVELOPMENT:

There has been a Hotel in the Tasmanian Central Highlands for over 100 years. They have been known for their log fires and as a great place to have a meal and a drink as you pass through or after a day fishing for the elusive trout.

Central Highlands Tasmania PTY LTD, has purchased the Great Lake Hotel and surrounding land.

Over the next 4 years the property will be redeveloped into what will be known as Miena Village and incorporate a new hotel (it will still be called the Great Lake Hotel), relocated to a more elevated position to take in more expansive views of the lake. The new hotel will cater to locals, outdoor purists, daytime tourers and will ensure a warm welcome to all who visit. The space will be an inviting travel stop, complete with the same magnetic fireplaces as its predecessor and multiple food and beverage options, ranging from fine dining, to a more relaxed tavern and bistro downstairs. Our focus is to make sure that will all the change we maintain the same unique atmosphere the Central Highlands, and particularly the Great Lake Hotel, has become famous for. Our aim is to make sure there will truly be something for everyone.

To compliment the new hotel and accommodation facilities, we will be building a new fully provisioned independent grocery store, providing everything from fresh food and staples to fishing and hiking gear and everything in between. This will be complimented with an onsite bottle shop and fuel outlet offering high flow diesel, 91 and 98 octane and multiple electric vehicle charge stations.

Along with the new buildings the necessary road works, sewerage and other infrastructure will also be developed, making sure any impact on the land is minimised and the site is kept as natural as possible.

This exciting development will open up Tasmania’s Central Highlands to the growing tourism market and provide significant local business and employment opportunities.

The development will be undertaken in stages with the first stage having already been completed in November 2019, which included the refurbishment of the current Great Lake Hotel and General Store, as well as significant upgrades to sewerage and the demolition of miscellaneous outbuildings and a general clean-up of the site.

The refurbishment included a new kitchen in the hotel and upgrades to the interior while the refurbishment to the general store included greater take-away food options and a large expansion of the grocery range, the introduction of ready to heat meals, a coffee loyalty program, fresh fruit and veg and locally sourced meat and dairy.

The second stage of the development aims to be completed in early 2021. This will see the refurbishment of the existing hotel rooms, the completion of the first round of Hydro Lodges and Highland Huts and the new camping and caravan sites and facilities. It will also include the expansion of the existing General Store and bottle shop and the building of the laundry and amenities block.

It is very exciting times at the new Miena Village, and now that we are gradually getting back to normal after COVID-19, it is full steam ahead. We encourage visitors and locals alike to follow our journey and document the changes so that one day they can be shared, perhaps while sitting around brand new welcoming log fires, along with stories of the old ones.
